Currently there are many engineering software systems designed to efficiently evaluate different structural solutions and/or strategies for reinforced concrete buildings. However, turning the adopted solution into a full Revit model (including rebars in RC elements) is still a very time-consuming task that diminishes the efficiency obtained in the previous analysis/design phase. Native Revit tools for rebar detailing are helpful if structural elements are limited in number, but they lack the required efficiency when working in middle- to large-size projects. In this class, you'll see the challenges faced, and the workflow and solutions used to develop a Dynamo tool that communicates via API with the finite element analysis software CSI ETABS 2016. This tool automatically puts the reinforcement of different structural elements (such as regular and irregular walls, columns, and beams) into the Revit model.

In the architectural and engineering world, it's a challenge to integrate Rhino software for early design stages with Revit software for detailed design, collaboration, and documentation. Rhino excels in modeling intricate geometries. Revit has powerful information modeling capabilities. Revit is commonly used as the primary delivery platform. Bridging these platforms is critical for optimizing productivity. Our approach uses data exchange, through Dynamo, to seamlessly connect Rhino and Revit. We'll showcase how this integration facilitates fluid geometry exchange between the programs, and empowers users to generate native model elements directly from Rhino geometry in Revit. We'll explore precise data-structuring techniques, and provide invaluable tips for achieving seamless interoperability. Beyond technical details, our session will highlight broader benefits for architectural practices, including enhanced project collaboration, streamlined design processes, and expedited decision making with Autodesk Construction Cloud at its core.

This class will dig into Revit software with tips and tricks from the low-hanging fruit (symbols, text, and standards) and things to consider (metric, Imperial or soft metric, geographies, and so on). We'll look at using note block content for abbreviation lists and schedules, processing diagrams using custom families, and keynoting. We'll cover assemblies codes, what view templates are and how to use them effectively for consistency from templates forward, sample practices for view naming and browser management in anticipation of exports, and ways of managing work sets in local and linked files to help speed up your system by simply organizing data. We'll also look at how work sets track through links, schema for management, best practices on file sizes, and how to push those limits and possibly a few Dynamo Scripts to assist in management and setups of projects.

Contemporary rail projects are vastly complex due to an intersection of several key factors. The deliverables and support that agencies and contractors ask for are scaling with new technology. These technologies are relatively new to the rail design space, and there are currently no precedents for implementing them. On two similar rail projects, tailored workflows and custom automation tools were developed in order to deliver the required standard documentation, visualization, clash detection, and asset management deliverables. The synergy between automation, connected BIM, and creative project workflow were essential to the execution of these projects. In this session, we’ll examine the project needs, collaboration between BIM 360 software and ProjectWise, and automation with the Subassembly Composer, Dynamo, Forge, and LISP.

On rail infrastructure projects, consultants provide tunnel ring models for entire alignment, created using a two-point adaptive family based on the track center point via Dynamo. But these models lack detailed tunnel features—segmentation and dimple holes. Coordination with stakeholders requires complete tunnel models with segmentation and dimple holes. We must develop this detailed model to accurately place services brackets along the tunnel. The ring comprises eight segments, including a key segment with a varying location. A family of these segments, with a rotation parameter set by the tunnel's center point, is essential. Our process involves deriving the tunnel's center from track center points using geometric translations. Dynamo makes placement points for adaptive components. The angle of rotation is recorded on the site for the key segment in XYZ, and we develop construction model using that data. This construction model aids subcontractor in accurate service modeling.

This class will cover the struggles our CAD/BIM department faced in managing Autodesk products, and how we used batch files to streamline the process. We'll explore batch files that update, configure, and manage AutoCAD software, Revit software, and Dynamo software. Topics include distributing the Revit.ini, resetting the AutoCAD profile, distributing Dynamo to the masses, and much more. By the end of the class, attendees will learn how to create, execute, and apply batch files to everyday CAD/BIM management tasks.

The rapid evolution of design technology, software, and cloud services changes how architectural offices and companies operate, and provides great opportunities for improvements that should be used. This follow-up class to “Custom Computational Workflows for BIM Design Implementation” shows how Revit software and Dynamo can benefit from these new developments and cloud services that can provide more global, efficient, fluent, or even fully automated workflows. Current practical examples of custom workflows we use at Zaha Hadid Architects showcase how manual and cross-application design-to-BIM tasks can be implemented via intelligent parametric elements and scripted processes. As a next step, these can be translated into cloud-enabled workflows for further automation and efficiency. What methods, tools, and cloud-services are available and which skills are required to use them?

Exhibition design of any sort has a unique set of needs based on event diversity, and equine and livestock venues are no different. The frequent transition of layouts demands a wide variety of designs. The Populous Equine and Expo team recently implemented Dynamo and Generative Design in Revit software to provide optimized outcomes driven by underlying data and customer requirements for future growth. Through this effort, Populous was able to produce detailed higher-quality layouts at 95% efficiency. This panel discussion will review the outcome of this exercise, focusing on time savings during stall and pen layouts at the conceptual phase, and providing a look into planned developments around automation and resulting BIM (Building Information Modeling) content. We will highlight the value of building your own tools and maximizing automation workflows, and discuss our plans for the next steps in expanding the applicability to other market sectors.

We'll share insight into using software like Revit, Navisworks, and Autodesk Construction Cloud to optimize collaboration and streamline workflows. This session will serve as a valuable road map, offering a clear understanding of how building information modeling (BIM) integration enhances project efficiency and minimizes risks at this critical stage.

A cross-industry technology fusion! We used Autodesk Generative Design software to create an adaptive connector bracket for robot-operated 3D scans of ancient structures. ReCap software and Dynamo helped us study traditional construction methods and enrich our restoration efforts. This report covers our process in Autodesk Fusion 360 software, including entering design parameters and extracting constraints from the historical site. It explains how we turned the bracket's requirements into criteria for rapid iteration and selection, quickly finding the best solution. It also explains how ReCap processed robot-collected point cloud data to investigate architectural principles and features of ancient buildings in Southern China. Finally, it describes how Dynamo converted these insights into automated building information modeling (BIM) scripting, bridging historical knowledge with modern technology for efficient restoration practices.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and generative design (GD) are transforming the architecture, engineering, and construction industry toward a more efficient design process. But is the built environment in danger of losing social and equity values as a result? The powerful combination of GD and Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) has the potential to assist architects in improving building functionality and sustainability, enhancing value for architects, developers, and residents. However, ethical and social sustainability values may be overlooked if the metrics of the GD and GAI are not instructed to identify and prioritize them. This class will combine findings from a multidisciplinary research project from Carnegie Mellon University, and real-life architectural projects by HED. Learn how to prioritize important equity and social sustainability values in human-in-the-loop AI powered design frameworks, making ethical and socio-sustainable design decisions measurable and transparent to all stakeholders, for a more equitable and resilient built environment.

We've all heard gloomy statistics about the challenge of finding skilled talent in today's market—and civil design and construction are no exception. Couple this with the trending demand for 3–7D model deliverables and ISO compliance that more clients are requiring, and it's no surprise that many firms are asking, "Can we do more with less, sustainably?" To that end, most know of Dynamo and its incredible potential to automate repetitive tasks, saving valuable time and money. And some have at least heard of the relative newcomer, the Standardized Data Tool for Civil 3D software, and its ability to aggregate, manipulate, and analyze project data from multiple drawings through a single spreadsheet. Now it's time to combine these powerful tools in the context of design workflows. This course will present a series of "how to" and "how come" case studies on using Forma to expand contextual understanding of architectural design. Where Revit excels at designing with the building envelop in, Forma excels at connecting building design to a broader context. Specifically, this is where working with Forma opens a new mode of architectural exploration with an emphasis on outcome-based design thinking. Forma allows the construction and analysis of a series of complex site-based issues: topography and existing conditions, environmental factors, infrastructure, and geographic data (GIS). This is then combined with multiple design proposals to study impact on energy, accessibility and circulation, embodied carbon, and the visceral connection between the building and site that can only be resolved through iterative, simulated explorations.

In an attempt to win my colleagues over to the Robot Structural Analysis software as a company standard, I ran into what seemed like an insurmountable wall: Robot Structural Analysis software doesn't generate 3D ASCE 7 wind loads! This class will walk you through the process I developed to utilize the amazing Dynamo program to grab element geometry, ask a few questions, and create ASCE 7-10 wind load combinations in Robot Structural Analysis software in an attempt to convince my bosses that Robot Structural Analysis software (React Structures platform) and Dynamo are the way of the future. This session features Robot Structural Analysis, Dynamo Studio, and Revit.

In this class we will go over some of the new features in Alias software that can help in procedural modeling techniques, and tools that you can create with scripts to be driven through Dynamo software. Dynamo is a visual programming platform that you can use to create custom algorithms to process data and generate geometry. Since version 2019, we have had an integration of Dynamo in our Alias line of products (Concept, Surface, and AutoStudio). With the latest release of 2021, we have included Dynamo player, which enables anyone to run scripts and capitalize on the power of these tools to improve workflows and processes to save time and effort.

In 2018, HMC Architects created a dedicated digital practice to support the firm's digital transformation. A major pillar of HMC's digital practice is technology training, which serves to develop the "digital IQ" of team members in their adoption of the latest technologies and methods.
